Review

This is part of my New Year’s reading resolution: finish the Taken series. I had this novella and the third book to read.

I decided to start with the novella so I could familiarize myself again with the world of Taken since it’s been awhile since I’ve read the first two.

This novel takes place before Taken but it’s better if you read it after it since there are some elements that need more context.

We follow the life of Bree before Taken. She comes from a village called Saltwater where boys and strong girls are “snatched” at their 18th birthday. With her father disappeared and her mother dead, Bree goes to live with her neighbours: the mother, Chelsea and her two sons Lock and Heath. Heath becomes like a younger brother to Bree while she falls in love with Lock, an unrequired love.

Bree's life hasn’t be easy and the events in this novel helps us understand what made Bree the person she is in the series and her character development. How she become so independent, why she doesn’t immediately trust anyone and how she ended up with the Rebellion. You can’t help but feel a bit sorry for her. Life in Saltwater seems a little boring, since it’s a small village surrounded by water. People either fish, hunt or do small jobs in the village. Bree is good at fishing and waits for life to happen and growing too fast.

The novel ends right when she enter the Taken world with her thoughts when she sees Gray to the first time.
