Alex and Darla have been staying with Alex’s relatives, trying to cope with the new reality of the primitive world so vividly portrayed in Ashfall, the first book in this series. It’s also been six months of waiting for Alex’s parents to return from Iowa. Alex and Darla decide they can wait no longer and must retrace their journey into Iowa to find and bring back Alex’s parents to the tenuous safety of Illinois. But the landscape they cross is even more perilous than before, with life-and-death battles for food and power between the remaining communities. When the unthinkable happens, Alex must find new reserves of strength and determination to survive.

Review

Read this for the Dystopian  Challenge Read a long for the month of May.

I really liked the first book and I wanted to see how the story continued. At the beginning I thought it was going to be a replica of the first book. Luckily, even if there are some similarities, the book changes course. We are introduced to some new characters and we have old characters development, especially I think that Alex grew a lot in this book. Unfortunately with don't see a lot of Darla who is one of my favourite characters, it's nice to see a very resourceful  young woman.

The book picks up after Alex and Darla decide to leave the safety of his uncle's house to go and search for his parents. We find a post- apocalyptic world where you can trust anyone and people would do anything to survive. I guess it's a bit like the world in the Walking Dead without the zombies.

It finished again with a cliff hanger and I really would like to read the third book and apparently there's going to be a fourth one too!!!
